• Acne causes great stress and anxiety. The appearance of acne can lead to self consciousness and isolation. Scarred skin marks the face for life.
• Hormones produced under stress increase sebum production making the acne worse.
• 85% of those aged 12 -24 and approximately 50% of men and women over 25 suffer from acne breakouts (Acne vulgaris: a disease of Western civilization. Cordain L, Lindeberg S, Hurtado M, Hill K, Eaton SB, Brand-Miller J. Arch Dermatol 2002 Dec;138(12):1584-90).
• Pharmaceutical treatments for acne often target only the bacterial infection, a superficial result of the underlying cause.
• Conventional treatments may lead to dangerous side-effects. Acutane may lead to suicidal depression according to the FDA and birth defects according to the manufacturers Roche.

Our Analysis

Four interconnected dysfunctions of the skin occur in acne vulgaris:

• Testosterone is converted to a more potent form, called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by an enzyme called 5 alpha reductase (5 Alpha R). Acne patients show an increase of 5 alpha reductase in the skin. Sensitivity of the sebum glands to DHT leads to swelling of the glands of the face and upper body and overproduce of sebum.
• Sebum trapped within the swollen gland oxidizes.
• The bacteria Propionibacterium acnes grow in the trapped oxidized sebum. Although his bacteria is present on healthy skin without acne, increased sebum provides the growth medium.
• The presence of bacteria attracts white blood cells to the swollen gland. These white blood cells produce an enzyme that damages the wall of the gland, allowing the contents to enter the tissue of the skin. This process causes inflammation seen as papules (red bumps), pustules, and nodules.
• The bacteria also cause the formation of irritant free fatty acids, increasing the inflammatory process.

Our Design

• Design of All Natural Acne focused on all four dysfunctions at the same time in a single topical formulation.
• An all natural gel as the carrier medium was selected to ensure maximum absorption and avoid clogging skin pores.

Our Formulation

• Hormonal influence triggers the glandular dysfunction and overproduction of sebum. All natural herbs and oils are used to inhibit the conversion of testosterone into the form that aggravates the sebum glands.
• Oxidation of sebum is the basis for the infection. The bacteria which are associated with acne proliferate in this oxidized environment. Sebum is composed of commonly occurring lipids - triglycerides, squalene, fatty acids and cholesterol. These are all subject to oxidation. We use all natural herbs and oils which specifically control and reduce oxidation in lipids.
• Infection is controlled by Tea Tree oil, a proven natural antibiotic. Research done on this oil shows that it is as effective as the commonly used treatment benzoyl peroxide but without its side effects (Bassett IB et al, A comparative study of tea-tree oil versus benzoyl peroxide in the treatment of acne. Med J Aust. 1990 Oct 15;153(8):455-8).
• Inflammation is the result of the infection. All natural anti-inflammatories in the formulation also reduce swelling. It is inflammation that caused the scarring.
